Chadar Trek 2025 kicks off: First batch of 30 adventurers embark on the frozen journey
Marking the beginning of an exhilarating journey, the Chadar Trek 2025 flagged off its first batch of 30 adventurous trekkers on January 13, setting off on the frozen Zanskar River.
The event was graced by Additional Deputy Commissioner Ghulam Mohammad, who officially flagged off the expedition.
The Chadar Trek is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and challenging terrain. Trekkers will navigate through frozen waterfalls, ice caves, and scenic villages in temperatures dipping below -20°C.
Ghulam Mohammad, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Leh, said, "The UT administration, along with LAHDC and the district administration, has flagged off the first batch of the Chadar Trek 2025. Following last year’s unsuccessful ice formation, our team took extra precautions this year. A committee was formed by the district administration, which conducted two surveillance missions to check the ice conditions, ensuring a safe and successful expedition for all participants. Furthermore, the UT administration, LAHDC, and the district administration have worked tirelessly to promote winter tourism and make Ladakh a winter hub for tourists. The Chadar Trek has been operating for many years, and we have shared SOPs with all relevant agencies, including ALTOA, HDRF, and district police. We have held meetings to discuss safety measures and ensure a successful trek."
The AD Tourism Leh emphasized that various stakeholders, including LAHDC, the district administration, the tourism department, and LMG, share the trek responsibility. "We first constituted a committee to check the ice formation along the Chadar route to ensure there were no safety issues. Once we confirmed that the ice had formed successfully, we were able to proceed with the trek. Medical check-ups were also carried out, and UT DRF issued an advisory with important guidelines to avoid any unwanted incidents," said AD Tourism Leh.
"Everything has been arranged to ensure the trekkers have an enjoyable and adventurous experience. We are committed to ensuring that the trek remains safe and successful. Additionally, environmental precautions have been put in place. All agencies have been urged to remind trekkers to collect their waste and dispose of it responsibly at the rural department shed in Nimmo, where it will be sold at a minimal rate for proper disposal."
The trek will begin at 11:00 am each day and conclude around 4:00 pm. The expedition will last for 40 days.
