29 men’s, 4 women’s teams compete in 17th CEC Cup Ice Hockey championship
The 17th CEC Cup Ice Hockey Championship commenced with great enthusiasm on February 11 at the Ice Hockey Rink, Biamathang, Kargil, drawing players and sports enthusiasts from across the district.
A total of 29 men’s teams and four women’s teams from various parts of Kargil district are participating in the prestigious tournament, reflecting the growing popularity of ice hockey in the region.
Acting Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Kacho Mohd Feroz, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and formally inaugurated the championship by performing the ceremonial puck drop.
Addressing the gathering, Kacho Mohd Feroz said that ice hockey has emerged as a strong identity of Ladakh and reiterated the Council’s commitment to promoting winter sports in the region. He stated that despite financial and administrative challenges, the championship was successfully organised through the joint efforts of the district administration and the Sports Department.
He further informed that several winter sports infrastructure projects, including skiing facilities at Drass, Linkipal, and Zanskar, are in the pipeline and awaiting approval. He also noted that the completion of the chilling system at the all-weather indoor ice facility in Kargil will provide improved training opportunities for young players throughout the year.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho, who attended as the Guest of Honour, said that such sporting events play a crucial role in building character among youth and help steer them away from drugs and other harmful activities. He emphasised the need to engage young people through positive and constructive platforms like sports.
Chief Medical Officer Kargil Dr Liyaqat Ali, DYSSO Kargil Abid Ali, the President of the Kargil Ice Hockey Association, other officials, and a large number of spectators were also present on the occasion.
The championship is expected to continue over the coming days, attracting enthusiastic participation and support from across the district.
