Zanskar administration holds key meeting on drug abuse, flags concerns over external supply
A meeting on drug abuse awareness and prevention was held at the Conference Hall, Dak Bungalow, Padum on June 10, under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Zanskar.
The meeting was attended by the Superintendent of Police, Zanskar; President of the Zanskar Buddhist Association (ZBA); President of the ZBA Youth Wing; President of Moin-ul-Islam; representatives of Ama Tsogspa, the Muslim Association, and the Gonpa Association. Officials from the administration, including the Tehsildar Zanskar, SHO Zanskar, Principal of Government Degree College Zanskar, Principal of Higher Secondary School Padum, Block Medical Officer (BMO) Zanskar, Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) Zanskar, and Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (TSO), also participated in the meeting.
During the discussion, serious concerns were raised regarding the inflow of narcotic substances from outside the district. Participants observed that Zanskar’s connectivity from three directions has increased the risk of drug trafficking, with some tourists and labourers arriving from outside states allegedly involved in bringing and supplying drugs to local youth.
The meeting emphasized the growing need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, educational institutions, community organisations, and religious bodies to prevent the spread of substance abuse and protect young people from falling prey to addiction.
Addressing the participants, the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police appealed to all stakeholders to remain vigilant and proactive in their respective areas. They urged community leaders, educational institutions, and local residents to promptly share any information related to drug trafficking or substance abuse with the concerned authorities.
The officials stressed that collective community participation and timely reporting of suspicious activities are essential to effectively curb the menace of drug abuse and safeguard the future of Zanskar’s youth.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment from all stakeholders to strengthen awareness initiatives and work together to build a drug-free and healthy society in the region.
