Workshop on herbarium preparation held at GDC, Kargil

One day workshop and hands-on training on herbarium preparation and preservation was organised by the Department of Biotechnology and Botany on December 5 at Govt. Degree College, Kargil.

The workshop was supported by Department of Biotechnology Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. 

Mohd Raza, Assistant Professor in Biotechnology and co-ordinator DBT-STAR college scheme, GDC-Kargil briefed about the DBT-STAR college grant and conveyed his gratitude to DBT-New Delhi for the support.

Dr. Mohd Shabir, Assistant Professor (taxonomist) in Botany, University of Ladakh, Kargil campus talked at first about IUCN nomenclature. He further elaborated on the methods and rules of nomenclature and the basics of taxonomy.

In addition, he elaborated on the articles of IUCN nomenclature that included status, typification, and priority of names.

In the second session, the expert talked about herbarium and its importance in research, education, and training. The session was followed by hands-on training on herbarium preparation wherein, the expert demonstrated the steps to be followed, in herbarium preparation and preservation. He further emphasised the necessity of establishing of a regional herbarium in the college to have a record of the local flora.

Faculties and students from the departments of Botany, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Environmental Science, participated in the workshop.

Prof. Rinchen Angmo, Head Department of Botany appreciated the speaker for such valuable insights into taxonomy and thanked all the participants who participated in the workshop. He further thanked coordinator, DBT Star college scheme of the college for organising the workshop and also thanked Principal, Dr. Amina Qari for her support in conducting the programme.

The programme concluded with presentation of mementos to the speaker and certificates to the participants. Prof.Tundup Namgial, from the Department of Biochemistry, conducted the program proceedings.
