Veer Gatha event honors heroes of Sherqui La victory

CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon attended the Veer Gatha event on December 15, commemorating the historic capture of Sherqui La, a strategic mountain pass, during the India-Pak War of 1971.

The event, organized at Government Higher Secondary School Silmoo, honored the valor of soldiers and the contributions of civilians during the war. Among the attendees were Brigadier Ragudeep Minhaz, Sena Medal, Commander of the 192 Mountain Brigade; Col. AK Malitha, Commanding Officer of the 21 Garhwal Rifles; ex-serviceman Tsering Stobdan; soldiers; villagers; schoolchildren; and other dignitaries.

In his address, Dr. Akhoon paid heartfelt tributes to the soldiers, expressing deep gratitude for their sacrifices and dedication. He emphasized national pride, democracy, and the importance of honoring the soldiers who safeguard the nation’s borders.

“We live in a garden of diverse flowers, united under one democracy,” he said. Dr. Akhoon praised the Army’s Sadbhavana initiatives, particularly its efforts in running schools for the welfare of local communities.

Recalling the sacrifices made during the Kargil War of 1999 and other conflicts, Dr. Akhoon highlighted the invaluable role of the civilian population in supporting the armed forces. He lauded the Indian Air Force for its commendable airlift services during harsh winters and appreciated the Army for organizing the event despite the severe cold. On behalf of the people of Kargil, he assured unwavering support to the armed forces in all situations.

Ex-serviceman Tsering Stobdan recounted the inspiring story of the successful capture of Point 13,620 at Sherqui La, showcasing the bravery and strategic acumen of the soldiers.

The Vice Principal of Government Higher Secondary School Silmoo also addressed the gathering, commending the sacrifices of soldiers and the enduring bond between the Army and the local population.

Villager Arif Ladakhi shared the significant contributions of locals during the war, recalling how they carried supplies, provided logistical support, and assisted the Army during challenging times.

The event also featured cultural performances by students. Certificates and mementos were distributed to students and participants, with special felicitations for locals who played a pivotal role during the war.
