Two-day symposium on forest conservation concludes at GDC Drass

Government Degree College Drass, in collaboration with the Forest Division Kargil, successfully concluded a two-day event marking World Forestry Day, themed "Forests and Food." The program aimed to raise awareness about the vital role of forests in sustaining ecological balance and food security.
Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhone, emphasized various government-led initiatives to improve forest cover in the region. He highlighted the need for joint efforts between government agencies, local communities, and academic institutions to protect and preserve the environment.
SSP Kargil, Shree Ram R, spoke on the importance of afforestation and maintaining healthy forests. He underlined their role in ensuring ecological security and societal well-being, especially in remote regions like Drass.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, appreciated the observance of such events and urged students and local residents to play a proactive role in forest conservation. He stressed that community participation is essential to create meaningful impact and generate awareness at the grassroots level.
Divisional Forest Officer, Mohd Ali, outlined the importance of World Forestry Day in promoting sustainable forest management and preserving Ladakh’s fragile environment.
Students of GDC Drass added depth to the event with thought-provoking speeches on the urgency of forest preservation, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GDC Drass, spoke on the essential contributions of forests to biodiversity, climate regulation, and rural livelihoods. He expressed concern over the declining global forest cover and called for united efforts to safeguard these natural treasures for future generations.
The event was efficiently moderated by students of GDC Drass, who ensured the smooth conduct of the proceedings. The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks, appreciating the presence of distinguished guests, active participation from students, and the organizing team’s efforts.
