Sustainable livelihoods: Handloom training benefits 58 women in Changthang
A one-month intensive handloom training program under the Darwin Initiative successfully concluded on December 20 in Kargyam.
Organized by WWF-India in collaboration with Charkha Ladakh Phyang, the training witnessed enthusiastic participation from 58 women representing the villages of Sato, Barma, and Khera Pullu.
This initiative marks another milestone in WWF-India’s livelihood development efforts in Changthang. Similar training programs have been conducted in ten other villages, including Hanley (Punguk and Buk-Shado), Nyoma, Chumathang, Angkung, Phulak, and Tsokar. Over the course of the training, participants crafted an impressive collection of 70 items, including shawls, stoles, and mufflers, highlighting their growing skills and dedication.
The closing ceremony was graced by dignitaries, including Ex-Executive Councillor and Councillor of the Chushul Constituency, Konchok Stanzin; Nominated Councillor Venerable Konchok Tsephel; Senior Programme Officer, WWF-India, Rigzin Dawa; Nambardar of Kargyam, Thinles Angchuk; and Ex-BDC Chairman, Konchok Phuntsog. Master trainers Madam Thinley Gyamo, Madam Chamba Angmo, and Madam Rigzin Spaldon were also present. Community members and the women beneficiaries joined the celebrations, showcasing their achievements with pride.
The training aimed to empower local women by providing alternative livelihood opportunities while fostering leadership skills and a deeper connection to environmental and wildlife conservation. Participants expressed gratitude for the initiative, which not only enhanced their income potential but also inspired them to take active roles as stewards of Ladakh’s delicate ecosystem.
Speaking at the event, Councillor Konchok Stanzin emphasized the significance of such initiatives in promoting sustainable livelihoods and reinforcing conservation efforts. He commended the women for their dedication and creativity.
WWF-India reiterated its commitment to supporting Changthang communities through innovative programs that align with conservation goals. This training stands as a testament to the resilience and talent of the women of Kargyam and the collaborative efforts of stakeholders to build a sustainable future for Ladakh’s rangelands.
