Solid Waste Management plant to be installed at Kurbathang
A Municipal Solid Waste Management plant is to be installed at Kurbathang, Kargil. The plant will include infrastructure for landfills, converting waste to energy, and recycling or composting.
Commissioner/Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, UT Ladakh, Ajeet Kumar Sahu reviewed the progress of work on the SWM plant. The Consultant agency gave the Commissioner/Secretary a detailed presentation on the engineering and architectural design; construction, installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the Municipal Solid Waste Management plant and allied works in Kurbathang, Kargil.
The Solid Waste Treatment plant can divide solid waste into different parts, and further process it into valuable products. The system is designed to treat and process dry, wet, and mixed waste. The plant will not only eliminate waste pollution but will also help keep the environment clean.
The Consultant agency apprised the Commissioner/Secretary that a topographical and technical survey of the site had been completed. It was proposed that a recreational area for the public, at the site such as a café, will also be designed. The café will be constructed and operated on the waste management model; the official added.
Ajeet Kumar Sahu said that plastic waste can be managed most effectively at the local level by using it for the construction of road surfaces; paper and fabric waste can be reused to make recycled paper. The Commissioner/ Secretary directed the Consultant agency to complete the work within 7 months and assured them all support.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Santosh Sukhadeve; Director, Housing and Urban Development Department, Dr. Zahida Banoo; Project Manager, PMU for Smart City, Rahul Singh; Infrastructure Consultant, Harsh Jadav, and Consultant agency officials.
