Silk Route Festival 2026 celebrated with cultural fervour at Sumoor, Nubra

The Silk Route Festival 2026 was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Sumoor, Nubra, on June 26, showcasing the region’s rich cultural heritage, traditions and historical significance.

Deputy Commissioner Nubra, Mukul Beniwal, IAS, attended the event as the Chief Guest, while Superintendent of Police Nubra, Stanzin Losal, JKPS, and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nubra, Jigmet Raftan, JKAS, graced the occasion as Guests of Honour.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner Beniwal said that the Silk Route Festival celebrates Nubra’s unique cultural legacy, traditions and its historic connection with the ancient Silk Route. He also appealed to residents and visitors to support the ban on Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and adopt environmentally responsible practices to keep the district clean, green and sustainable.

Speaking on the occasion, SP Nubra highlighted the growing concern of drug abuse among youth and urged parents, community leaders and residents to remain vigilant, guide the younger generation and work collectively towards building a drug-free Nubra.

The festival featured vibrant cultural performances by local artists, reflecting the region’s diverse traditions and artistic heritage. Exhibition stalls established by the Village Lab Foundation and local exhibitors showcased traditional handicrafts, indigenous products and the unique cultural identity of Nubra.

The event was attended by Tehsildar Sumoor, Tashi Jorgais; heads of various departments; community representatives; tourists from different regions; and a large gathering of local residents, whose active participation contributed to the success of the festival.
