School of Agricultural Science and Technology celebrates World Soil Day, highlights sustainable soil management
The School of Agricultural Science and Technology (SAS&T), Leh Campus, University of Ladakh, celebrated World Soil Day on December 5 with a program aimed at raising awareness about the importance of healthy soil and advocating for its sustainable management to ensure food security and environmental conservation.
Dr. Padma Angmo provided an insightful briefing on World Soil Day and the significance of soil testing. She outlined the benefits of the Soil Health Card Scheme implemented by the Agriculture Department of Ladakh and emphasized its advantages for farmers. Highlighting the 2024 theme, "Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, and Manage," Dr. Angmo stressed the need to adopt practical measures for soil preservation and sustainability.
Dr. Anwar Hussain spoke on the importance of integrating traditional farming practices with modern agricultural techniques. He discussed traditional irrigation methods like Khakchu and cultural practices such as Stonlok (autumn ploughing), which play a vital role in maintaining soil fertility and supporting sustainable agriculture in Ladakh’s unique climatic conditions.
Dr. Lobzang Stanzin delved into the intricate process of soil formation, emphasizing that it takes centuries to form just one centimetre of soil. He encouraged students to spread awareness among farmers about soil health, soil testing, and sustainable management practices, underlining their importance for long-term agricultural productivity.
The event served as a platform to inspire students to appreciate soil as a vital natural resource and to equip them with knowledge to advocate for sustainable soil management in their communities.
