National Academy of Sciences hosts panel on sustainable development in Ladakh

The National Academy of Sciences, India, Jammu Chapter, in collaboration with GDC Drass, organized a panel discussion on "Sustainable Development in Ladakh: Prospects and Challenges" at Conference Hall Baroo on July 11.

Key dignitaries present included Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon as the chief guest, Executive Councilor, PHE/Tourism, Kacho Mohd Feroz, Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Shrikant Suse, Councillor, Saliskote Mohd Sajjad, CPO Abdul Hadi, Fellow National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Rabindranath Nath Gohil, and Principal GDC Drass, Dr. Amjad Abassi, alongside academicians from various colleges and stakeholders.

During the discussion, CEC Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon highlighted the need for sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurship opportunities for youth in the region. He mentioned the ongoing efforts of the Council in formulating a 'Vision Document 2047' and solicited suggestions from civil society and stakeholders.

EC Kacho Mohd Feroz emphasized the importance of sustainable practices in sectors such as Tourism, Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries, and others, stressing the balance between tourism promotion and ecological preservation in Kargil.

DC Shrikant Suse underscored the significance of development while conserving bio-resources, showcasing initiatives like the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and achievements of Self-Help Group (SHG) workers in Saliskote, advocating for increased self-entrepreneurship.

Prof. Rabindranath Gohil of the National Academy of Sciences highlighted the academy's commitment to bringing science to the grassroots level and ensuring scientific efforts benefit the wider community.

The event concluded with focused group discussions among stakeholders to further explore sustainable development strategies for the region.
