Acting on the directions of Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, a comprehensive cleanliness and urban improvement drive was launched in Leh city on March 20 with renewed vigour and commitment. The initiative aims to transform Leh into one of the cleanest, most organised, and tourist-friendly cities in the country.

Working in mission mode, government agencies have initiated large-scale operations to remove accumulated dust, as well as construction and demolition waste along roadsides across key areas of the city. The initial phase of the drive is focused on prominent locations, including Lok Niwas, the Secretariat, Leh Main Market, Jivetsal, and adjoining areas.

Simultaneously, preparatory work for extensive plantation is underway, with pits being dug along these stretches to enhance green cover and improve the city’s aesthetic appeal. The integrated approach is aimed not only at improving sanitation but also at promoting environmental sustainability and urban beautification.

The initiative follows Saxena’s visit to Leh Market and Old Leh Town on March 15, during which he issued clear directives for a sustained and large-scale effort to address issues related to sanitation, infrastructure, and overall urban management.

The Lieutenant Governor, who is personally monitoring the progress of the works, expressed satisfaction over the efforts of the government agencies. He noted that such coordinated and determined actions would significantly contribute to creating a clean, well-organised, and visitor-friendly urban environment in Leh.

Reiterating his vision for Ladakh, Saxena emphasised that sustained government efforts, coupled with active public participation, are essential to position Ladakh among the most sought-after tourist destinations in the world.

The UT Administration has urged citizens, local stakeholders, and visitors to actively support and participate in the initiative to ensure its long-term success and sustainability.
