An interaction-cum-brainstorming session with the newly appointed security personnel assigned to protect monasteries across Leh district was held at the Dharma Centre, Choglamsar, on April 9.

This initiative is part of the LAHDC Leh’s continued efforts to safeguard the cultural and spiritual heritage of Ladakh. Sixteen major monasteries in the district have been identified for enhanced security measures, which include the deployment of trained personnel and the installation of CCTV surveillance systems.

Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson, in his address, emphasized the importance of preserving Ladakh’s monastic institutions as living heritage sites. “Monasteries are custodians of our spiritual traditions and invaluable cultural and historical treasures. Their safety is a shared responsibility,” he stated.

He elaborated on the structured approach being implemented—comprising the deployment of trained security guards, installation of CCTV systems, and close coordination with the district police. He also mentioned that uniforms for the security personnel will be provided for both summer and winter. “The support of the district administration, under the leadership of DC/CEO Santosh Sukhadeve and the concerned officials, has been instrumental in realizing this initiative. Monasteries too must remain vigilant and actively coordinate with the deployed teams to ensure robust security,” he added.

CEC Gyalson personally felicitated the newly appointed security personnel and distributed their appointment letters, marking the formal commencement of their duties.

Executive Councillor Stanzin Chosphel thanked the CEC for prioritizing monastery security and taking concrete steps to address the issue. He congratulated the newly appointed personnel and underscored the importance of coordination among all stakeholders. He also acknowledged the valuable support of religious organizations and highlighted the role of teamwork in sustaining such initiatives.

Dr. Ishey Namgyal, General Secretary of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), noted that timely interventions have helped prevent thefts and other threats. He expressed appreciation for the initiative, which has also provided local employment opportunities.

Other speakers included Chief Planning Officer Tsewang Gyalson; President of the Ladakh Gonpa Association, Gyen Tsering Angdus; Deputy Secretary, Culture Department, Tsewang Paljor; and Additional SP Leh, Regzin Sangdup. All congratulated the new security personnel and expressed gratitude to the LAHDC for its proactive support.
