Ladakh remembers Col Chhewang Rinchen on his 24th death anniversary
Tribute was paid to the Col Chhewang Rinchen on his 24th Death Anniversary by Ladakh Scouts Ex-servicemen and his family members on 30th at Memorial Stupa.
LSRC, Commanding Officer, Col Rinchen Dorje attended the wreath laying ceremony.
Tsering Morup, President, Ex-Servicemen Ladakh Scout said, “Today we are gathered here to pay tribute to the ‘Lion of Ladakh’ Col Chhewang Rinchen. His work for the nation is uncountable and all Indians are well aware of his sacrifices. He is the twice recipient of MahaVeer Chakra (MVC), the second highest Indian gallantry award and Sena Medal.”
Family members, relatives and friends Col Chhewang Rinchen also attended and remembered him on his 24th death anniversary.
Sharing the valour of his father Sonam Dolkar, Daughter of Col Chhewang Rinchen said, “I feel proud being a daughter of a brave Indian soldier. He is the youngest recipient of MVC in the Indian army at the age of only seventeen in 1947. Later he participated in the Indo-China war in 1962 for which he was honoured with Sena Medal. After, in 1971 war (Indo Pak) he was awarded with the second MVC.”
Col Chhewang Rinchen was born on November 11, 1931 at Sumur village, Nubra Valley in Ladakh region. He is known as the 'Lion of Ladakh' for his extraordinary acts of courage in defending Leh and Partapur sector in face of attacks by adversaries. He participated in wars in 1948 (Indo-Pak), 1962 (India-China) and 1971 (Bangladesh war for liberation), and was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, the second highest gallantry award in the country twice, besides a Sewa Medal for being part of various operation. He is one of only six armed forces personnel to have been twice awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
