Ladakh Administration celebrates Constitution Day
Commemorating the adoption of the Constitution of India, Ladakh celebrated Constitution Day or ‘Samvidhan Diwas’ on November 26.
Advisor Ladakh, Umang Narula along with all the Administrative Secretaries read the Preamble to the Constitution of India at the UT Secretariat. They also took part in the celebratory function held at the Central Hall of the Indian Parliament in New Delhi through live streaming.
On November 26, 1949, the Constitution was adopted and it came into effect on January 26, 1950. According to the Government website, The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on 19th November 2015 notified the decision of the Government of India to celebrate the 26th day of November every year as 'Constitution Day' to promote Constitution values among citizens.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, who became the first law minister of India in the Congress-led Centre, was appointed as the chairman of the constitution drafting committee in 1947 and was given the responsibility of writing the country’s new constitution. American historian Granville Seward Austin has described the Constitution drafted by Ambedkar as ‘first and foremost a social document’.
The day was also observed in various sub-divisions, schools, colleges, and departments of the Ladakh region.
