KVK Nyoma, locals join hands to boost green cover in Changthang
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra Nyoma Changthang, under the University of Ladakh, marked a significant step toward environmental sustainability by planting over 1,480 willow trees at the KVK Nidder Farm on April 26.
The plantation drive was conducted under the guidance of L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena and VC Saket Kushwaha, with the aim of enhancing green cover across the Union Territory.
Led by Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head of KVK Nyoma, along with his team, the initiative emerged as a strong example of community-driven environmental stewardship in the fragile high-altitude ecosystem of Changthang.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from residents of Nyoma, Mudh, and Nidder villages. More than 65 villagers actively contributed to the success of the drive, reflecting strong local engagement.
Community members played a crucial role in every stage of the plantation process—from pit digging and sapling placement to spacing and initial irrigation.
Their indigenous knowledge of the terrain, climate, and soil conditions proved invaluable in selecting suitable planting sites and improving the survival rate of the saplings.
Despite logistical challenges posed by the region’s remoteness and harsh climatic conditions, the plantation was successfully completed through coordinated efforts and collective participation.
This initiative underscores a growing shift toward community-led environmental conservation, highlighting the impact of collaboration between scientific institutions and local communities. It also reinforces the importance of sustainable practices in preserving the ecological balance of the unique Changthang region.
The plantation drive stands as a testament to the shared commitment of KVK Nyoma and local residents to environmental conservation, while strengthening the bond between people and nature.
