Joint meeting held to finalize rationalization of Karakoram, Nubra-Shayok, and Changthang Wildlife Sanctuaries

Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson of LAHDC Leh, in the presence of Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, chaired a joint review meeting on February 8 at the Civil Secretariat Leh to finalize the rationalization process for the Karakoram, Nubra, Shayok, and Changthang Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The meeting began with a detailed PowerPoint presentation by the Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, outlining the rationalization process for these wildlife sanctuaries, followed by an in-depth discussion on implementing result-oriented solutions.
The Advisor to the LG emphasized the need for a balanced approach that supports both conservation efforts and sustainable development. He highlighted the importance of ensuring ecological preservation while addressing local livelihood concerns, stressing that human habitation should not be negatively impacted.
CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson, along with other Executive Councillors and Councillors, raised their concerns and suggestions regarding the rationalization of sanctuary boundaries. Detailed discussions focused on boundary demarcation, biodiversity conservation strategies, and the involvement of local communities in protecting these ecologically sensitive areas and agricultural lands. The meeting acknowledged the rights and demands of the local population and directed officials to ensure that these rights are upheld while achieving practical, result-oriented solutions.
The Forest Department officials presented reports on the current status of the wildlife sanctuaries, outlining key conservation challenges and proposed solutions. The rationalization process aims to enhance habitat protection, streamline management strategies, and address issues related to human-wildlife conflict.
During the meeting, the Advisor emphasized the need for thorough coordination with the CEC, LAHDC Leh, concerned councillors, and other stakeholders before finalizing the rationalization of the Karakoram (Nubra-Shayok) and Changthang Wildlife Sanctuaries.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to expedite the rationalization process while ensuring that conservation priorities are upheld. A final proposal will be submitted to the State Wildlife Board for further processing.
The meeting was attended by the Dy. Chairman of LAHDC Leh, Executive Councillors, Councillors from Nubra and Changthang, Commissioner Secretary of Forests, UT Ladakh, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, UT Ladakh, Councillors, DC/CEO, LAHDC Leh, Wildlife Warden Leh, Assistant Commissioner Revenue, and other concerned officials. The Director of the Wildlife Institute of India participated virtually.
