District Child Protection unit opens child helpline, open shelter in Leh
Child Helpline Unit and Open Shelter was inaugurated by CEC, Hill Council, Leh Tashi Gyalson on November 14 at the District Child Protection Office.
Member Secretary Ladakh Legal Service Authority, Spalzes Angmo; Principal Magistrate Juvenile Justice Board, District Social Welfare Officer Leh, SHO Women’s Police Station Leh, and many dignitaries and attendees were present at the inauguration ceremony.
CEC, Tashi Gyalson stressed the importance of protecting children and the role of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) Dial112 helpline in addressing social issues and child abuse. He also highlighted the need to educate children about the harmful effects of drug abuse.
He praised the efforts of the Social & Tribal Welfare Department in Leh for implementing programs like Mission Vatsalya and ensuring coverage of all the social Welfare Schemes throughout the district. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Hill Council, Leh to provide assistance, particularly in offering quality education to underprivileged students from economically weaker backgrounds.
Spalzes Angmo spoke about the importance of informing students about the benefits of the child helpline number. She said that the number can be a lifeline for anyone in need, and it should be available always. She stated that it is crucial for all the stakeholders like the Legal Service Authority, DCPO, NGOs, and the Police to come together and prioritize the protection of children.
District Child Protection Officer, Nilza Angmo said that the Child Helpline Service is for children who are feeling stressed or facing any problems.
“ Dial 112, the universal emergency number in case of an emergency, and the immediate concern department takes it up. If it’s a non-emergency but further action is needed, it’s taken up by the District Child Protection Unit. And if a child needs counseling or support, we provide those services also", she added.
