DC Sham reviews enforcement measures against single-use plastic and littering

Deputy Commissioner, Sham, Kunzes Angmo (JKAS), chaired a meeting at the Conference Hall of the DC Office, Sham, on June 27 to review and strengthen the implementation of the ban on Single-Use Plastic (SUP) and measures to curb littering across the district.

The meeting was attended by Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Likir; Tehsildars and Naib Tehsildars of Sham District; Principals of Government Higher Secondary Schools; Headmasters of Government High Schools; Block Development Officers; Range Officer, Forest Department, Khaltsi; and other concerned officials.

Representatives from community organisations, including President, Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Sham; President of the Namberdar Association along with Namberdars of Sham District; Vice President, Merchant Association, Khaltsi; and members of other associations involved in public awareness activities were also present.

The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for regular inspections, awareness campaigns and enforcement drives to prevent the use of banned plastic items and control littering in public places. She stated that strict action, including penalties, would be taken against those violating the Single-Use Plastic ban.

She directed the R&B Division to ensure provision of separate toilet facilities for labourers at construction sites to maintain proper sanitation and hygiene standards.

The Deputy Commissioner also urged the Ladakh Buddhist Association, Nambardar Association, Merchant Association and other community organisations to actively spread awareness among villagers about the harmful impacts of single-use plastic, promote eco-friendly alternatives and support the administration in effective implementation of the ban.

She further called upon educational institutions, market associations, Panchayati Raj Institutions and the public to actively participate in maintaining a clean and plastic-free environment through responsible waste management practices and adoption of sustainable alternatives.

The meeting concluded with a collective commitment from departments, community organisations and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation of government directives and make Sham District cleaner, greener and free from single-use plastic.
