DC Kargil chairs meet on decongestion, smart mobility and urban reforms

A meeting on traffic decongestion and urban mobility was convened on April 9 under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC Kargil, Rakesh Kumar (IAS).

The meeting focused on addressing the growing problem of traffic congestion in Kargil town and explored measures to improve urban mobility, public convenience, and overall town planning.

Detailed discussions were held on the removal of encroachments, streamlining parking facilities for transport unions, and developing adequate infrastructure for tourists in and around the town. The status and management of truck stands were also reviewed, with emphasis on ensuring smooth and regulated traffic movement within and outside the town.

The Deputy Commissioner directed strict action against encroachments and instructed concerned departments, particularly Revenue and Municipal authorities, to undertake their removal in a planned and systematic manner.

Issues related to shifting of bus stands and regulation of bus movement were also discussed. The Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for improved road planning and effective implementation of smart city initiatives to strengthen urban management. The installation of solar-based temporary traffic signals and improved lighting arrangements was also proposed to enhance traffic regulation.

Further, emphasis was laid on promoting road safety awareness among the public. A key proposal discussed during the meeting included the provision of free bus services for differently-abled persons and students to ensure inclusive and accessible transportation.

The meeting was attended by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kargil; Project Officer, Wages (ACD); Executive Engineer, PWD Circle; Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic); Executive Engineers of PHE, R&B-II, and PDD; representatives of the Municipal Committee Kargil; and the Assistant Regional Transport Officer.

The Deputy Commissioner underscored the importance of inter-departmental coordination and timely action to effectively address traffic challenges and improve Kargil’s urban infrastructure.
