Cryosphere awareness event highlights climate concerns at EJM college, Leh
Eliezer Joldan Memorial (EJM) College, in collaboration with the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) Western Himalaya Regional Centre, organized an awareness program on October 11, themed “Science and Society for Cryosphere” at EJM College, Leh. The event was hosted by the Department of Geography, Geology, and Environmental Sciences.
Prof. Tashi Ldawa, Director of College Affairs, University of Ladakh, graced the occasion as the chief guest.
In his address, Prof. Ldawa emphasized the importance of identifying cryosphere-related issues in Ladakh, especially in light of climate change. He urged students to understand the critical role of glaciers, permafrost, and snow cover as vital sources of water for the region.
Dr. P. G. Jose, Head of NIH’s Western Himalayan Regional Centre, delivered a talk on the “Role of the Cryosphere in Sustaining Surface Water Flows in the Upper Indus Basin.” He discussed the influence of snow cover, glaciers, permafrost, and rainfall on river flows, as well as the effects of the depleting cryosphere. Specifically, he highlighted the Phuche Glacier above Gangles and Khardung Glacier, addressing their mass balance, retreating rates, and seasonal variations.
Dr. Riyaz Ahmad Mir, Scientist C at NIH, presented on “Hydrological Significance of Glaciers in Ladakh: Challenges and Concerns.” He explained the fundamental dynamics of glaciers and the implications of climate change, including related disasters such as Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Ladakh. He also shared his research on glacier area changes in Ladakh from 1962 to 2023.
The presentations were followed by an engaging question-and-answer session. Around 300 students, along with faculty members, participated in the event.
