In a significant move towards sustainable waste management and community-led development, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Foundation and the Rural Development Department (RDD), Ladakh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on March 25.

The collaboration aims to establish efficient Solid Resource Management Centers (SRMCs) in Kharu and Chuchot blocks of Leh district, promote scientific waste management practices, and generate livelihood opportunities for local communities in Ladakh.

The MoU was signed in Leh by Chandrakant Pradhan, representing the CII Foundation, and Junaid Amin Bhat, District Panchayat Officer, Leh. Both parties expressed confidence that the partnership will serve as a model for sustainable waste management in the region.

The partnership aims to promote scientific waste management, environmental conservation, and the economic empowerment of local communities. Under the collaboration, the CII Foundation and RDD will work together to develop and strengthen Solid Resource Management Centers (SRMCs) across Ladakh, conduct capacity-building programs, and implement pilot projects focused on sustainable waste solutions. The initiative emphasizes innovative waste management practices, active community participation, and skill development to ensure long-term, impactful outcomes. Effective immediately, the agreement will be implemented over 18 months—from March 25, 2025, to September 30, 2026—marking a transformative step in Ladakh’s waste management ecosystem and fostering both environmental and economic resilience.
