The Union Cabinet has approved an additional two-year engagement period for Agniveers who are not selected for regular service after completing their initial four-year tenure, creating a further pathway for their possible absorption into the Defence Forces.

As envisaged under the Agnipath Scheme, 25% of Agniveers will be offered regular employment in the Defence Forces based on merit. The remaining 75% will have the option of undertaking an additional two-year engagement period, following recommendations from the Indian Defence Forces.

According to the Cabinet decision, after completing the additional two-year tenure, these Agniveers will also be offered the opportunity to enrol as regular soldiers, subject to their willingness and fulfillment of the prescribed selection criteria.

The decision follows a detailed assessment of the Agnipath Scheme after four years of implementation. The assessment, based on organisational requirements and operational efficiency, reportedly found Agniveers' performance positive in terms of skills, motivation, physical fitness and technological adaptability.

The introduction of the additional engagement period aims to align the aspirations of Agniveers with the operational requirements and organisational efficiency of the Defence Forces.

Among the key achievements highlighted in the assessment are the expansions of Agniveer recruitment across districts of the country, a more standardised and transparent recruitment process, and improvements in physical fitness, morale, motivation, competitive spirit and discipline.

The scheme has also contributed to skill development, technological adaptability and educational advancement among personnel, while opening up various branches of the Defence Forces for women.

Based on the assessment and feedback received, the Cabinet has decided to continue the Agnipath Scheme. The additional two-year engagement period will also provide for higher remuneration, an enhanced Seva Nidhi package and seniority benefits.

The latest decision marks a significant development in the Agnipath recruitment framework, providing eligible Agniveers with an extended opportunity to serve in the Defence Forces before consideration for regular enrolment.
