The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) Kargil successfully concluded an intensive eight-day workshop on Social, Emotional and Ethical (SEE) Learning on February 10 as part of its winter training initiatives. The programme was conducted in two phases and aimed at equipping educators with skills to foster compassion, emotional resilience and ethical awareness in classrooms.

The SEE Learning curriculum, an evidence-based approach to holistic education, focuses on developing compassionate individuals and resilient school communities. Emphasising empathy, perspective-taking and self-efficacy, the sessions enabled teachers to manage classroom dynamics more effectively and promote ethical decision-making among students.

The workshop was organised in two phases. The first phase, held from February 2 to 5, oriented 45 elementary and middle-level teachers towards foundational SEE Learning competencies. The second phase, conducted from February 6 to 10, expanded participation to 90 educators, including 10

Heads of Institutions (HOIs) and 80 teachers, primarily from PM Shri Schools. Dual sessions were conducted to ensure wider participation across the district’s leadership and teaching staff.

The training featured a mix of reflective practices, group discussions and hands-on activities. Core modules were structured around four key pillars: Self-Awareness, focusing on understanding one’s emotions and thoughts; Compassion, aimed at nurturing empathy for self and others; Systems Thinking, to help educators recognise interdependence within communities; and Ethical Engagement, which provided practical tools to translate ethical understanding into meaningful classroom action.

Participants shared positive feedback on the impact of the workshop. Teacher Skarma Jungley said, “This workshop opened my eyes to the power of compassion in the classroom. The reflective practices helped me better support my students’ emotional needs, making teaching more fulfilling and effective.” Another participant, Zakir Hussain, remarked that SEE Learning components are crucial for handling classroom conflicts with empathy and fostering a positive learning environment.

Workshop Coordinator Dr Willayat Ali expressed optimism about the programme’s outcomes, stating that the initiative would help build a cadre of compassionate educators and lay the foundation for sustainable educational development across Kargil district.

Reflecting on the programme, Principal SD Namgyal said that in today’s fast-paced world, SEE Learning is essential not only for academic excellence but also for emotional and ethical growth. He added that the workshop aligned well with DIET’s winter training goals and would empower teachers to create compassionate classrooms benefiting both students and the wider community.
