62nd Rezang La day commemoration concludes at Rezang La memorial
The four-day commemoration of the 62nd Rezang La Day concluded at the Rezang La Memorial on 18 November, honoring the exceptional courage and sacrifice of the soldiers of 13 KUMAON, who displayed extraordinary bravery in the Battle of Rezang La during the 1962 Indo-China War.
This event marks a significant chapter in Indian military history, paying tribute to the resilience and dedication of those who defended the nation to the last man and the last bullet.
The celebrations, held from 15 to 18 November, featured various activities to foster community spirit and commemorate the gallant bravehearts of Rezang La. The events com-menced with a drawing competition, where schoolchildren creatively depicted themes of Leh-Ladakh and the Indian Army. This was followed by a cultural program by students from the Chushul and Tangtse regions, reflecting the unity and pride of Ladakh’s border communities.
Demonstrating the spirit of sportsmanship, men’s and women’s cricket matches were organized, bringing together participants from Chushul and Tangtse. A significant highlight was the scaling of Point 5935, now dedicated to the memory of Maj Shaitan Singh, PVC, the valiant hero of 13 KUMAON who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Battle of Rezang La. This peak, renamed in his honor, stands as a symbol of unwavering courage.
A heartfelt felicitation ceremony for Veer Naris (war widows) acknowledged the strength and resilience of the families who share in the sacrifices made for the nation.
On 18 November, the commemorative day began with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony led by the Chief Guest, General Officer Commanding, Ultimate Force, joined by senior Army officials, veterans, and ex-servicemen to pay homage to the fallen heroes. This was followed by a special interaction with ex-servicemen, where veterans shared their experiences, strengthening the bond between serving personnel and their predecessors.
A film screening on the Battle of Rezang La offered attendees a visual tribute to the courage and resilience of the brave soldiers.
These commemorative events honored the legacy of Rezang La and served as a powerful reminder of the values of sacrifice, duty, and patriotism.
