‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ kicks off at Leh

A nationwide mass cleanliness drive: Clean India Campaign or ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan’ was also observed at Leh on Gandhi Jayanti, October 2 was organized by Nehru Yuva Kendra Leh, Department of youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Youth Affairs and Sports of India in collaboration with the District Administration at Polo Ground Leh.
The rally, flagged off by MP Thupstan Chhewang from Polo Ground, passed through the main bazaar creating awareness amongst the general public regarding ‘Swachh Bharat’ and to keep the country clean and green. The students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, EJM College, JNV, Girls and Boys Higher Secondary School carried banners, pamphlets and placards passed from main bazaar Leh and concluded at Polo Ground.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukhdev Singh, Zonal Director, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan J&K said: “the purpose of campaign is to create awareness and educate the youth on key issues in thematic areas provide information on the avenues for Skill Development, encourage and empower them with the spirit of Nationalism and volunteerism. This program has been launched from the four districts of the country which are situated at extreme tips of India i.e Leh in J&K (North) Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu (South), Okha in Gujarat and Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh and will culminate on September 25, 2015 at Mathura U.P”.
While paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Thupstan Chhewang said: “we celebrate this day annually, but this year it would be symbolic and different and in true sense a real tribute to the Father of Nation. PM Modi has started a campaign that within five years India will be neat and clean country with the contribution of each and every individual. There is an urgent need of more public toilet, sanitation facilities and cleaning our surrounding and this task should start from our homes and community”.
EC Tourism Mohd Shafi Lassu said: “Gandhi always dreamed of a neat clean and green India. Today as instructed by PM Narendra Modi, this campaign has taken place in all parts of the country. We all should continue with this campaign every day and keep our environment clean and to educate every one regarding the importance of a clean environment. Government has already started many public toilets and many are under pipeline so that people do not urinate everywhere”. He added that the responsibility lies on the youth to create awareness among the general masses regarding cleanliness.
At the end students and volunteers took oath that they will always keep their environment clean and will contribute in fulfilling the dream of Mahatma Gandhi by making clean and green India.
Meanwhile BJP workers under MP Thupstan Chhewang, Tsering Dorje Lakrook, President BJP, Leh cleaned the area around their office and main market.
Dorje Angchuk President BJYM said that we are educating people to keep their environment clean and all need to work together for making this event successful.
Likewise, Airport staff headed by Sonam Nurboo, Airport Director Leh also pledged to keep their surrounding clean. The different Head of the Department of Airport started this drive by planting saplings at the airport to make it clean and green and later cleaned the area in and around the airport.
