Nam Suru village in Suru Valley is fast emerging as a promising hub for paragliding and adventure tourism, marking a significant stride in Kargil’s tourism development efforts. A series of successful trial flights, jointly conducted by the Kargil Tourism Development Authority and the Department of Tourism, Kargil, has showcased the region’s vast potential for aerial sports.

Recognizing the natural landscape and suitability of the area for paragliding, Deputy Commissioner Kargil visited the site on June 11 to assess its feasibility. Following a positive evaluation, resources were allocated to support the promotion of adventure tourism. As part of this initiative, local youth were trained in paragliding, and essential equipment was procured to facilitate the activity.

Acting on the DC's directive, Assistant Director Tourism, Kargil, Mohd Ali Tak, along with Accounts Officer Shamim Wazir, visited Nam Suru to oversee the trials. Accompanied by experienced pilot Stanzin, the team assessed the site’s topography and confirmed it to be safe and well-suited for paragliding. This marked the fifth successful trial flight, further strengthening the location’s viability for adventure sports.

In fulfillment of a prior commitment made by the Deputy Commissioner, paragliding equipment was formally handed over to local stakeholders by the Tourism Development Authority. The initiative aims to empower the local community and build sustainable tourism infrastructure in the region.

“The promotion of adventure tourism is expected to generate employment opportunities and position Suru Valley as a key attraction for visitors,” said Accounts Officer Shamim Wazir.

AD Tourism Mohd Ali Tak reiterated the department’s vision to transform Suru Valley into a premier adventure tourism hub. He emphasized the importance of community participation in ensuring sustainability and urged locals to support eco-friendly practices that enhance the overall visitor experience.

Councillor Aga Ainul Huda welcomed the initiative and praised its timely implementation ahead of the upcoming Suru Festival, which is expected to host international paragliders. Paragliding is set to be one of the festival’s main highlights, further boosting the region’s tourism appeal.
