Ladakh’s Ice climbing festival concludes, paving the way for winter sports and innovation

The 6th Edition of the Ladakh Ice Climbing Festival concluded on February 3 in Gangles village. Organized by the Ladakh Mountain Guide Association (LMGA), the three-day event (February 1–3) attracted a diverse group of participants and dignitaries.

The event was attended by Dr. Pawan Kotwal, IAS, Advisor to Lt. Governor; Santosh Sukhadeve, IAS, DC Leh; Tsering Angchuk, Deputy Chairman, LAHDC, Leh; Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepag, Councillor Upper Leh; students from Shara and kids’ society, Leh. 

In his welcome address, LMGA President Skalzang Rigzin introduced the association and outlined the motivation behind organizing the festival. He also called on the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) to support the construction of an international-standard ice climbing wall, while addressing some of the challenges encountered this year.

Dr. Pawan Kotwal expressed his excitement for the event, emphasizing the importance of promoting winter sports in the region. Tsering Angchuk highlighted the festival’s continuous improvement and assured support to enhance the event in the future, all while preserving the aesthetic beauty of the area.

Two young participants shared their festival experiences, highlighting how their confidence has grown over the years. One student remarked, “Last year, I was really scared, but this year I wasn’t,” reflecting a newfound sense of assurance and readiness to take on challenges. Another participant added, “Last year, it was difficult, but I still enjoyed it. This time, I’m excited to climb the ice wall.” Their comments underscore personal growth and the festival's evolving ability to inspire and nurture courage in its participants.
