Football and environmental awareness unite as Climate Cup 2024 begins

The Climate Cup 2024 commenced with a spectacular opening day on September 1, blending the thrill of football with a powerful message about climate change. Organized by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, in collaboration with the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh and the Ladakh Football Association, this tournament seeks to unite communities worldwide in the fight against climate change while celebrating the beautiful game.

The opening ceremony was graced by His Eminence Thuksey Rinpoche. Chairman/CEC Adv. Tashi Gyalson of LAHDC Leh attended as the Guest of Honor. Other notable attendees included Executive Councillor for Culture Stanzin Chosphel, Secretary of Youth Services and Sports Vikram Singh Malik, Secretary RDD Amit Sharma, DIG Ladakh Police Sheikh Junaid Mehmood, Former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Former CEC Rigzen Spalbar, Former CEC Gyal P Wangyal, and Former EC and BJP Ladakh President Phunchok Stanzin, along with several senior officials and dignitaries.

The day's matches delivered thrilling football action. In the first match, Gokulam Kerala FC showcased exceptional skill and teamwork, overpowering Skalzangling FC with a commanding 8-1 victory, setting a high bar for the tournament. The second match saw NorthEast United FC narrowly defeat 1 Ladakh FC with a 2-1 scoreline, highlighting a closely contested and exciting game.

The enthusiastic crowd created a vibrant atmosphere in the stadium, reflecting the region’s deep passion for football. Following the matches, dignitaries presented the Man of the Match awards, celebrating the players' outstanding performances and their role as ambassadors for the Climate Cup’s core message of environmental sustainability.
