Week-long road safety campaign concludes in Leh This year alone, out of 51 FIRs, 27 are related to Motor Vehicles Act, in Leh

A week-long road safety campaign, ‘29th National Road Safety Week’ was organised by Assistant Regional Transport Office, Leh in collaboration with government and private organisations. The campaign was started from April 23 to 29 in Leh. The aim was to make people aware of traffic rules and regulations. Various programme were organised during the Road Safety Week on April 23 in and around Leh.
On an inaugural day, Suraj Singh, Dy SP Headquarter informed that in 2018, out of 51 FIRs, 27 are related to Motor Vehicles Act in Leh.
Moses Kunzang, ADC stressed upon the importance of educating school children about road safety. He said that road safety programme could be introduced in schools as a curriculum in the coming days.
On April 24, a bicycle rally covering 15 km from Leh town to Police Line, Choglamsar was held which was organised by Police department in collaboration with M/S Summer Holidays in Mountain Biking, Ladakh Bike Shop, Mentokling Motors and JK Bank Ltd Leh.
On April 25, a public awareness and online service facility at Nubra subdivision was organised by ARTO and Shatuk SML Mazda Dealer, Leh.
On April 26, a debate and painting competition was organised by Mentokling M&M Dealer and ARTO Leh at Lamdon School where students of Delhi Public School and Lamdon participated.
On April 27, a free eye check-up camp, basic medical and SDRF training to the drivers was organised in collaboration with Togo Hyundai, Health Department, and Taxi Union.
While on 28 and 29, stage play was showcased on the Road safety and pamphlet distribution was organised by Druk auto zone, NHI Force Motors and Govt. institutions respectively.
On the concluding day, Chering Dorjey, Minister for Cooperative and Ladakh Affairs said that the basic perception of road safety is based on 3 Es–Engineering, Education, and Enforcement.
He said that Leh has been witnessing an improving trend in traffic system in the recent months and the people feel a sense of comfortable movement on the roads of Leh now.
He further credited the initiatives of Avny Lavasa, DC and appreciated Sargun Shukla, SSP Leh for smooth implementation of traffic regulations. And also mentioned about LAHDC’s directives and support to ensure productive results in the district.
Stanzin Losal, ASP said, “In a small district like Leh, the accident rate is high which is a matter of concern. So, people must follow the traffic rules strictly for their own and others safety".
“Traffic is a challenge here and we received many complaints about the regulation of the traffic. Last year in the month of October we started a drive in collaboration with District administration and seen a positive change”, he added.
Khadim Hussain, Assistant Regional Transport Officer said, “The purpose of the campaign is to minimize the road accidents and streamline the traffic. We should not blame each other as everyone is responsible once they are on road. We all should inherit good attitude by following the traffic rules.”
With great enthusiasm, the Road Safety Week was campaigned widely, raising awareness and encouraging everyone to take action in making the roads safer. The campaign supported by all, promoted responsible road use and to prevent and stop the road mishaps.
