Three shops gutted in massive fire in Moti Market

Three shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at Moti Market on November 27 around 7:00 am. While property worth (approximately) ₹ 24 lakh was destroyed, no casualty was reported.

The exact cause of the fire has not been ascertained yet. According to the police, prima facie it appeared that the fire started due to an electric short-circuit.

Speaking on the incident, Tsewang Dorjay, SHO, Leh said, “We heard a loud noise around 7 in the morning and rushed to the spot where the three shops, a furniture and tailor shop and a restaurant was in a blaze. Two cylinders exploded at one time and the fire brigade was there on time to immediately douse the flame”.

He further added, “We have called the Junior Engineer and the Lineman to get more clarification on this matter and the investigation is going on.”
 
Stanzin Tsewang owner of the furniture shop said, “I was informed around 7:00 am and rushed to the spot. After half an hour the police and fire extinguisher reached the spot. It was very difficult to combat the fire since the cylinder was inside the restaurant.

“I have suffered a loss of ₹ 15 lakh and the district administration has promised for the compensation”, he added.

Padma Lamo, Restaurant owner said, “I have incurred a huge loss and the district administration, Tehsildar and the president of the market assured every possible support.”

Dr. Sonam Dawa, CEC, Avny Lavasa, DC and other concerned officials took stock of the incident.  Whereas, Deldan Namgyal, MLA Nubra announced ₹ 3 lakh from his CDF to the shop owners.
