SAS&T-Leh campus observes World Environment Day with awareness and art

World Environment Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at the School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Leh Campus, University of Ladakh.
Dr. Lobzang Stanzen, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) highlighted the global significance of World Environment Day and the 2025 theme focusing on environmental sustainability and the urgent need to reduce plastic use. He also emphasized the importance of conserving Ladakh’s unique and fragile ecosystem.
In his keynote address, Prof. D. Namgyal spoke about the increasing influence of western disturbances and their impact on Ladakh’s climate. He stressed the vulnerability of the region’s ecosystem and the urgent need for collective action. Prof. Namgyal also expressed concern over the growing presence of microplastics in the environment and their adverse effects on both human and animal health. He urged the younger generation to embrace eco-friendly lifestyles and actively participate in environmental protection.
As part of the celebration, a drawing competition was organized on the themes “Beat Plastic,” “Climate Change,” and “Green Planet,” to promote environmental awareness through creative expression. Dr. Kunzes Angmo and Dr. Sonam Spaldon served as the judges.
From the B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture program, Padma Lhanzes won first prize, followed by Dorjay Gyaltsen in second place and Tsewang Rabgay in third. In the Basic Agriculture Training (BAT) program, Tashi Dolker and Akbar Ali were awarded for their outstanding artwork.
Dr. Kunzang Lamo, Assistant Professor (Fruit Science) expressed gratitude to all guests, participants, and organizers for their efforts in making the event a success and reaffirming the shared commitment to environmental conservation.
