The 78th Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic zeal in Kargil, where Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, hoisted the national flag at Khree Sultan Chow Sports Stadium Biamathang.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from contingents of the Ladakh Police, the Police Band Party, and students from various government and private schools, who took part in the march past.

The celebration was graced by Member of Parliament Ladakh, Mohmad Haneefa Jan; Executive Councillor Kacho Mohammad Feroz; DC/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Shrikant Suse; SSP Kargil, Shree Ram R; Brigadier Prateek Parshar, Commander 121 Brigade; Director RD&PRD; Director ULB; Director Tourism; Director Education; Joint Director Information, Ladakh; Ex-Minister (J&K) Qamar Ali Akhoon; along with ADC, ACR, senior officers, district officials, police officers, representatives of religious organizations, public members, and students and staff from various schools.

In his address, CEC Dr. Akhoon extended his congratulations to the people on Independence Day and paid tribute to the national heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.

"The freedom we enjoy today is the result of the hardships and struggles endured by our brave heroes throughout the freedom movement. We owe them a debt of gratitude for securing us a prosperous and independent nation," he remarked.

Dr. Akhoon emphasized the importance of developing a spirit of self-sacrifice and love for the country's development and prosperity. He also called for upholding the principles of democracy and equality in society.

Reiterating the spirit of patriotism and humanity, Dr. Akhoon praised the Army, paramilitary forces, and police for their service in guarding the nation's borders under harsh conditions and maintaining peace and security.

Highlighting the efforts of LAHDC Kargil, the CEC assured that no stone is being left unturned for the welfare of the people, with prioritized projects showing visible results. He noted significant improvements in health services, including the strengthening of hospitals and Health and Wellness Centres, and announced the upcoming installation of an MRI machine at the District Hospital Kargil.

The CEC underscored the importance of tourism to the local economy, noting that LAHDC Kargil prioritizes tourism infrastructure development across the district. He mentioned efforts to promote Kargil as a tourist destination, with measures being taken in collaboration with the travel trade fraternity.

Dr. Akhoon also highlighted the support provided to the Animal Husbandry Department and the provision of fresh drinking water to fourteen thousand households, thanks to newly established water testing laboratories. Additionally, he discussed the upcoming sewerage network system and the commencement of work on the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Kargil town.

Addressing employment issues, the CEC noted that numerous unemployed individuals have been provided with job opportunities, and efforts are ongoing to fill vacant positions in various departments. He also mentioned the establishment of examination centers for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams in Kargil district.

In the energy sector, Dr. Akhoon outlined initiatives to improve electricity supply, including the installation of transformers and kilometers of cable wire in Kargil town. He also announced the forthcoming reconstruction of the Iqbal Hydel Power Project, which will boost electricity production.

Dr. Akhoon shared that significant funding has been released for welfare schemes benefiting laborers and workers, and arrears for Old Age Pensions have also been distributed. He further announced a Rs 400 crore project to ensure a 24x7 drinking water supply in Kargil town.

On education, the CEC spoke about the Hill Council's efforts, including the distribution of laptops to meritorious students, the provision of free winter coaching, and the recruitment of teachers for Hindi, Urdu, and Bhoti languages. He also announced the upcoming construction of the district’s first residential school and hostel for physically challenged children.

The CEC expressed gratitude to the UT Administration, especially Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor Dr. B.D. Mishra, for their assistance in the district's overall development. He also thanked district officers, directors, chief engineers, and other HODs for their contributions to resolving public issues effectively.

Dr. Akhoon urged local media to act responsibly, avoid promoting negative news, and uphold the media's role as the fourth pillar of democracy. He called on the people of Kargil, including religious, political, and social organizations, to cooperate with LAHDC Kargil in achieving the district's prosperity and development.

Following his address, the CEC and other guests presented awards to 16 officers and officials from various departments for their outstanding service to the public. The event concluded with a cultural program, including skits on water conservation and freedom fighters' stories, performed by students from different schools. The students were later awarded certificates and mementos for their performances.
