Comprehensive mock exercise on Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) was successfully conducted in Ubarak village of Padum, Zanskar on August 22.

The exercise was organised to evaluate the readiness and coordination of various departments and agencies in responding to potential GLOF disasters in the region.

The mock drill began at 09:00 a.m. when villagers in Ubarak presumed (simulated) GLOF incident in Tehsildar Zanskar. Acting swiftly, the Tehsildar alerted all relevant departments, including Police, Incident Response Team (IRT), Medical, Roads & Buildings (R&B) etc.

As part of simulated exercise the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) promptly informed the District Magistrate, requesting the activation of DDMA and UTDRF. Personnel from the Police, UTDRF, Army, and BRO responded quickly, arriving at the site to initiate rescue operations.

The Revenue Department, ICDS, Food and Supplies, PWD, Sheep Husbandry, and Animal Husbandry and others took active part in the exercise. The entire exercise was streamed live on several occasions with the National Disaster Management Authority’s Ex-Coordinator, further highlighting the significance of the exercise.

The mock exercise concluded successfully. SDM extended gratitude to all participating departments for their active and coordinated efforts. He also reviewed the preparedness, availability of personnel and equipment within each department. Villagers expressed their appreciation to SDM and officials for conducting the crucial exercise.
