LG Ladakh discusses establishment of consumer commissions in Leh and Kargil

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) discussed the establishment of State Disputes Redressal Commission/ State Consumer Commission and District Disputes Redressal Commission/ District Consumer Commission in the Union Territory of Ladakh, Leh and Kargil districts on August 11.

Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Ladakh, Yetindara M. Maralkar, IAS, informed LG about the necessity to establish the State and District Commission under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. He also informed that a State and District level Consumer Commission are required to effectively address consumer issues in Ladakh.

He apprised the LG of the requirement of the post of one President and four members for the State Consumer Commission and one President and two members District Consumer Commission in Leh and Kargil.

Maralkar, IAS, also highlighted the requirement of manpower for both the State and District Consumer Commissions along with the infrastructure developments for these commissions.

LG Ladakh directed Secretary, Yetindara M. Maralkar, to modify certain positions within the commissions to reduce liability. He instructed the creation of the post for Registrar instead of Assistant Director in the State Commission, an Assistant Registrar in the District Consumer Commission and a Multitasking Staff position instead of a Chowkidar in both the State and District Consumer Commissions. He also emphasised the importance of establishing the Consumer Commissions at the earliest for the benefit of the people of Ladakh.

Advisor to the LG, Dr Pawan Kotwal, IAS; Secretary, Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Ladakh, Yetindara M. Maralkar, IAS and Member, District Consumer Commission, Shravan Kumar Nune were present in the meeting.
