KVK Kargil-II celebrates Kisan Diwas with local farmers
KVK Kargil-II celebrated Farmers' Day (Kisan Diwas) at Barsoo on December 23, commemorating the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, the fifth Prime Minister of India, who is widely recognized as the “Champion of India’s Farmers.”
The event honored the invaluable contributions of farmers to the Indian economy and shed light on the challenges they face, aligning with the theme, “Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture.”
The program was attended by Sheikh Mohd Ansari, Councilor of Barsoo Constituency, LAHDC Kargil, as the chief guest. Other notable attendees included Chief Agriculture Officer Ashiq Hussain Basharat as the guest of honor, Dr. Siraj Ud Din, Block Veterinary Officer (Sankoo), and Liqat Ali.
Dr. Siraj Ud Din addressed the farmers on livestock-related issues, emphasizing the role of livestock in boosting agricultural productivity and ensuring livelihood security for tribal farmers in remote areas. He highlighted how livestock sustains agricultural land and enhances farmers' economic stability.
Ashiq Hussain discussed advanced agricultural practices, particularly the adoption of high-yield seed varieties for fodder crops. He stressed the connection between quality fodder, livestock health, and increased production of meat and milk. He also shared insights into modern cultural practices designed to maximize agricultural output and their impact on India’s GDP and employment.
Dr. Mehdi, Principal Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil-II, elaborated on the advantages of protected cultivation, such as growing vegetables during the off-season. He explained the success of cultivating crops unsuited to open-field conditions and commended farmers for their enthusiastic participation despite the harsh winter weather.
Before the chief guest’s address, an interactive session was held between scientists, experts, and farmers. Sheikh Mohd Ansari expressed his gratitude to the scientists and officers of KVK for organizing the event. He acknowledged the importance of adopting advanced agricultural technologies and appreciated the efforts of the livestock department in raising awareness. He encouraged continued initiatives like training sessions and awareness programs to benefit the local farming community further.
A total of 121 farmers participated in the event. The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by a progressive farmer, who lauded the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders in making the event a success.
