Kargil stakeholders discuss redevelopment of historic old bazaar and Silk Route
A stakeholders meeting regarding the redevelopment of the Old Bazaar and Silk Route in Kargil was held at TFC Kargil on October 25.
The initiative aims to transform the centuries-old heritage site into a prominent tourist destination. Attendees included the CEO of KDA, the AO of KDA, the XEN of KDA, the president of the Ready-Made Garment and Footwear Association of Kargil, consultants from NEEDS (the architectural consultancy for the project), contractors, traders, shopkeepers, and other concerned stakeholders.
The meeting focused on strategies and action plans for the heritage conservation of Old Bazaar Kargil. Consultants presented updates on current project developments and solicited insights and suggestions from stakeholders.
Plans for the historic Old Bazaar were outlined, including proposed designs for streets, plazas, public conveniences, drainage, and shop renovations. The consultants reported having conducted a thorough survey of each shop included in the redevelopment project.
Addressing concerns from traders and shopkeepers about potential business disruptions during renovations, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) directed contractors to ensure that renovations proceed in phases, with each shop completed within 15 days. He emphasized that any delays would necessitate compensation for business losses.
The president and other shopkeepers agreed to temporarily close their businesses for 15 days to facilitate the work, while also demanding compensation in the event of delays.
