Kaksar bridge renamed Capt. Amit Bhardwaj Setu in tribute to Kargil War Hero
Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, attended the renaming ceremony of Kaksar Bridge to Capt. Amit Bhardwaj Setu, in honor of Capt. Amit Bhardwaj, who sacrificed his life during the Kargil War.
The event was attended by Major General K. Mahesh, SM, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Mountain Division; Deputy Commissioner/CEO LAHDC Kargil, Shrikant Balasaheb Suse; Councillor Bhimbhat, Abdul Wahid; DSP Kargil Tundup Dorjay, along with other civil and military dignitaries.
In his address, CEC Dr. Jaffer Akhoon expressed his pride in being part of the ceremony. “There are no words to express my gratitude to the heroes who sacrifice their lives to safeguard our nation and its borders,” he said.
Dr. Akhoon praised the Indian Army for its dedicated service and highlighted its role in running schools in Kargil under the Sadbhavana Scheme, which provides modern education to local children. He also commended the Army's continued efforts to airlift Kargil passengers during the harsh winter months.
Concluding his speech, the CEC offered prayers for the eternal peace of Capt. Amit Bhardwaj and extended his heartfelt thanks to his sister, Sunita Dhonkaria, who attended the ceremony from Jaipur.
Earlier, Sunita Dhonkaria inaugurated a memorial at the bridge in honor of her brother.
Notably, during the 1999 Kargil War, Capt. Amit Bhardwaj of the 4 JAT Battalion was deployed in Kaksar, Kargil. Leading a search and rescue patrol, he successfully saved his platoon from an ambush by infiltrators, ultimately sacrificing his life in service to the nation.
