Fostering Inclusivity: Transgender Outreach Program Held in Ladakh

The Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, organized an outreach program on Transgender Identities and Inclusion on October 19. The event featured Don Hasar (She/They), a Queer Trans Rights Activist and Cultural Resistance Worker, as the key speaker.

The program began with an introduction to the theme by Deachen Angmo, a Gender Specialist from Mission Shakti, followed by a welcome speech from Tashi Dolma, Director of Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh. Dolma emphasized the importance of such outreach initiatives in fostering a more sensitive and inclusive society.

Padma Angmo (IIS), Commissioner Secretary of the Social and Tribal Welfare Department, UT Ladakh, stressed the need for greater awareness on gender-related topics. She underscored the importance of engaging with the transgender community to better understand their challenges and to work towards addressing their specific needs through targeted interventions.

In her presentation, Don Hasar explored the complexities of gender, its role in society, and how it shapes our perceptions. She also facilitated a discussion with participants, providing insights into the Transgender discourse and the Trans* Act of 2019, highlighting key aspects of the legislation. Additionally, Hasar spoke on the critical role of educational institutions and safe spaces in fostering inclusivity.

The event also featured short films, a survey documentary, and a musical performance by singer KKT. A diverse audience attended, including women’s organizations from different religious backgrounds, political stakeholders, representatives from educational institutions, medical and healthcare professionals, Ladakh Police, and others who participated enthusiastically.

This outreach program marks a significant step towards promoting understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of the transgender community in Ladakh.
