First small hydro project worth 16.90 cr inaugurated in Drass The project is of 1.5-megawatt capacity and has two units of 750 KW

A Small Hydro Power Project (SHP) of 1.5 MW capacity was commissioned in Drass on 21 November. The total cost of the project, fully funded by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, is ₹16.90 crores and this is the first project to be commissioned under the Prime Minister's Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative (LREI).

The project has been developed by Kargil Renewable Energy Development Agency (KREDA) under Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council.

The project was inaugurated by Chairman J&K Legislative Council Haji Anayat Ali and the Chairman/Chief executive Councilor LAHDC Kargil Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan at Bairas Drass.

The project is 1.5 Megawatt capacity have two units of 750 KW, which came up at a cost of 16.90 cr including transmission and distribution up to 10 km from the project site.

This is the first project commissioned which has been designed at the lowest water discharge which will meet up the power requirement of 1,500 households in Drass.

Informing the people about the opportunities of electricity generation in Kargil district Haji Anayat Ali told that PDC will soon initiate the tendering process to build a 25-megawatt capacity Hydel Project at Drass.

He further urged people to coordinate the implementing agencies for the success of the project during the harsh winter and directed the departments to have proper coordination amongst them so that electricity will be properly utilised.

Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan, Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil told that initially the project has to be completed in a period of twelve calendar months from the date of its inspection of the project but unfortunately due to the poor performance of the contracting company the project could not be completed on time, which forced the governing body to direct KREDA to take over the project under their own supervision and control.

He further told that six more projects are coming up and three of them shall be commissioned in the summers of 2018 and this will reduce the electricity burden of the district.

Haji Asgar Ali Karbalia, MLA Kargil, Executive Councilor, LAHDC Kargil Advocate Mohammad Amir, Advisor to CEC Haji Shafi and Project Director KREDA also interacted with the people.

Wazir Willayat, Engineer, Senior Consultant of KREDA told that the project is done in isolation mode which is a great benefit as it is not dependent on grid mode to synchronize.

Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan, Project Director KREDA told that the project was on testing since 2 November 2017 and was proved to be successful in all respect, civil and electromechanical, under -10 degree Celsius.

He further told that the project was designed keeping in view the lowest discharge of water from Biaras stream in peak winter under -30 degree Celsius which will be beneficial during the peak winter season.

On this occasion Executive Councilor Advocate Mohammad Amir, Syed Arman and Mohammad Hussain, Advisor to CEC Haji Mohammad Shafi, T Gyalpo, SSP Kargil and other district officers and prominent citizens were also present.
