Dr. Pawan Kotwal stresses need for road safety measures, functional driving schools in Ladakh
Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, chaired a meeting at the Civil Secretariat, Leh, to review the recommendations of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety. The meeting focused on determining the cause of the tragic school bus accident that occurred on August 22, 2024, in Leh, which resulted in 7 fatalities and 21 injuries.
Administrative Secretary for R&B, Michael D'Souza, briefed the Advisor on the accident details. The meeting featured in-depth discussions on the committee's recommendations, aimed at preventing future accidents in the region.
Dr. Kotwal instructed officials to form a Road Safety Committee to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in UT Ladakh. He also directed them to identify accident-prone areas and bottlenecks on highways and take corrective measures.
To further improve road safety, Dr. Kotwal stressed the importance of making driving schools fully functional and strengthening the process for obtaining driving licenses. These measures, he emphasized, are essential to tackle the growing menace of road accidents in the region.
The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Sanjeev Khirwar, Administrative Secretary R&B Michael D’Souza, District Magistrate Leh Santosh Sukhadeve, Regional Transport Officer Leh, Director of Health Services, and other concerned officials. The Director of School Education, UT Ladakh, joined the meeting virtually.
