A delegation from Kungyam, led by Councillor, Thinles Nurboo, met the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr.) BD Mishra (Retd.), at the Lieutenant Governor’s Secretariat on February 8.
Advisor to the L-G, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, IAS; Commissioner/Secretary to the L-G, Dr. L. Franklin, IAS; and Secretary, IT, Shashanka Ala, IAS, were also present at the meeting.
Thinles Nurboo apprised the L-G of the challenges faced by Kungyam residents due to frequent voice call disruptions in the absence of an optical fiber cable (OFC) connection. He informed that the village currently relies on VSAT for voice calls and internet access. While a Jio tower was installed under the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) in 2021-22 to provide telecommunication services, he urged the L-G to facilitate the village’s connection to a dedicated OFC line for improved connectivity.
Recognizing the importance of enhanced telecommunication for Ladakh’s remote communities, the L-G reiterated his commitment to improving digital infrastructure. He emphasized the need to upgrade the existing 2G network to 4G. He directed Secretary, IT, Shashanka Ala, IAS, to expedite completing the 4G mobile service saturation project in uncovered areas.
