BASGO :
One among an exemplary work for the people of Ladakh. A total area of 300 Kanal out of 500 kanal area lands beside the Indus River called Tantse in East Basgo has been made cultivable through sprinkle irrigation. The accessibility to this area is through 7 km long road from the National highway.
The land was not into the knowledge of everyone and thus came into light among few people from Basgo. Thus, Panchayat of Basgo initiated to take up this land for the community purpose.
The project was started from the year 2013 under the MGNREGA scheme. The land is accessible only through mountains. Villagers get united to work and made a road stretching 7 km between the mountains. The road was made with a total cost of 5 lakh rupees.
The objective was to make this land used for the benefit of the whole society. The main initiative was to cultivate sea buckthorn, but we decided to cultivate alfa -alfa for some years. One of the important things is that the irrigation for this land was made by sprinkle method.
Departments like NHPC and Sheep husbandry extended their support and effort to make this project successful. With a cost of ₹ 20 lakh sprinkle irrigation technology was provided by sheep husbandry whereas NHPC has provided the generator set.
The land was leveled by the villagers and made cultivable with a total expenditure of ₹ 6 lakh.
Basgo Sarpanch, Stanzin Gurmet said that initially when the idea was adopted lot of criticism and word impossible was there. All this happened and was made possible with the effort and dedication of everyone. In the year, 2013 we started our work, construction of the road was very important, so everyone started without any help of experts from the departments. In the year 2015, we have cultivated alfa-alfa on this land. The soil test was done and it was proved that the land is fertile for the cultivation. Because no fertilizers have been using we are making it fully organic.
The land is also suitable to cultivate medicinal herbs in future.
He further added that there is a plan to make a boating or rafting place from the tourism point of view so that it will create employment opportunity for some youths and income will also be generated. For this, we have already talked with the NHPC and they have asked to make it keeping it 4 km away from the Hydel- project.
He said that from the schemes like MGNREGA villagers can do a lot more for their own good. It is just that we need to think about our future and get united do something creative for the cause of all.
The whole planning was put into action with the effort of everyone and a dedication to making the project successful for the benefit of all.
Such effort is one of an example of famous saying nothing is impossible. The point is that everyone should learn from such activities and initiative to make the society or Ladakh a peaceful and place of harmony and development. Seeing the effort one message conveyed is that we should think out of the box. Being more innovative and creating more and more opportunities.
Villagers can take a lot more benefit from the schemes like MGNREGA because there is no dearth of work; the only think is a hard work.
