Another Phuktal like situation at Shahsi Lake Kargil

Irrigational canals, lands, livestock, Pashmina goat, roads and trees were washed away after flash floods occurred in Hunderman Brok and Maal, Lankarchey Brok and Thang and Ichu-Shargandik, Kochik, Thulus and Pursa on 11 May. In Shargandik the CAPD store has been washed away. People of border district Kargil are facing problems due to flash floods since last one month.
People of these areas demanded the immediate restoration of the damaged irrigational canals, the need of construction of protection walls along waterways, compensation for trees and crops as well as live stocks.
Due to sudden rise in temperature snow melts abruptly thereby increasing the risk of floods more. To look into the matter, Acting CEC Aga Syed Abass Razvi called a meeting of district officers and councillors in which Executive Councillor Syed Mujtaba, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan and other district officer participated.
During the meeting, Acting CEC directed the concerned officers to start restoration works on war footing particularly of irrigational canals.
A team of officials led by Dy SP SDRF Kargil along with Councillor Shakar Zakir Hussain visited the famous Shashi Lake after news of sudden leakage, arising threat to the villagers of Sandoo, Sanjak, Kharboo, Lhalung etc.
The team assured the people immediate solution for stoping the leakage for which the councillor announced that from tomorrow 2 JCB’s and Trippers will be engaged.
Councillor Zakir Hussain said that if the leakage is not stopped on time, there is apprehension of huge damage from the Lake, on the patterns of Phuktal and added that people need not be panic but should be alert as precaution.
Zakir also added that MLA Kargil Haji Asgar Ali Karbalie called upon Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and briefed about the situation on which Div Com directed DC Kargil to assess the situation on May 12.
In the meantime Councilor Poyen Liyaqat Ali called upon the Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan and requested for relief and rehabilitation works at Hundarman Brok where people have suffered huge loss to agriculture land, trees and the most expensive damaged to Apricot trees which are the main source of their income.
Hassan Khan assured the Councillor that immediate steps will be taken on priority basis.
The main department concerned with the rural areas and rural people the Rural Development Department is without Project Director DRDA and Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) from the last one and half months and from the last 5 months the department is without Project Officer Self-employment and Haryali.
Due to the non-presence of these officials, people of the rural areas are suffering a lot, particularly during the time of disasters. The people are requested the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to kindly intervene in this matters so that their suffering can be lessened.
