Seminar on ‘Preserving Our Past: Conservation of Cultural Heritage’ held 150 participants attend seminar focused on rock art and indigenous language preservation

The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), in collaboration with Ten Friends of Lalok, successfully organized a one-day seminar titled "Preserving Our Past: Conservation of Cultural Heritage (Rock Art and Indigenous Language) for Future Generations" at Tangtse Community Hall on September 8. The seminar attracted around 150 participants, including gobas (village leaders), local residents, and students and teachers from various schools, such as Centralized Residential School Tharuk, Govt. Middle School Tharuk, KGBV School Tangtse, Govt. High School Kargyam, and Govt. Middle School Shachukul. Thinles Angchuk, President of LBA Lalok, emphasized the importance of preserving Ladakh’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage for future generations. He welcomed the speakers from the LBA Language Committee, including Ven. Urgyan Dadul and Tundup Dorjay (Stakmo), along with representatives from the LBA Heritage Committee, Dr. Sonam Wangchok, and Prof. Tashi Dawa. Ven. Dr. Urgyan Dadul shared the LBA Language Committee’s slogan, "Rang-zan Zo, Rang-gos Gon, and Rangskat Kol", during his talk on the importance of the Bhoti language. He showcased the richness of Bhoti grammar and literature through examples from Kangyur and Stangyur. He encouraged residents of Durbuk Block to use the Bhoti script for business and restaurant names and urged teachers to instill pride in their students for their ancestral language. Renowned Ladakhi folk singer, Tundup Dorjay Stakmo, gave a presentation on "The Role of Folk Songs in Preserving Indigenous Language." He encouraged children to learn traditional songs, explaining their meanings and cultural significance. His live performance of traditional songs captivated the audience. Dr. Sonam Wangchok delivered a presentation on "Cultural Preservation and Challenges," stressing the importance of understanding the values of cultural and natural heritage. He advised villagers against using modern materials like cement when restoring ancient monuments and encouraged consultation with experts for heritage conservation. Prof. Tashi Ldawa highlighted the significance of rock art in his presentation and urged students to protect ancient petroglyphs from destruction. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding these artifacts as they are vital links to Ladakh’s past. Khenpo Tashi Dorjay, Guest of Honour and Umzad of Shachukul Monastery, spoke about the role of the Bhoti language in preserving Ladakh's spiritual and cultural identity. Tashi, the Tehsildar of Tangtse, assured attendees that the administration would work to protect the region's rock art and prevent it from falling into private hands. Chief Guest Rigzin, Vice-President of LBA Ladakh, praised the collaborative efforts of LBA Lalok, village gobas, and Ten Friends of Lalok in organizing the seminar. He pledged full support for future initiatives aimed at preserving Ladakh’s cultural and linguistic heritage. Dr. Stanzin Namgail introduced Ten Friends of Lalok, highlighting the organization’s activities and their focus on engaging young students to foster cultural awareness. Later, the participants went on a guided field visit to the petroglyph sites around Tangtse, led by Prof. Tashi Ldawa. Students performed traditional Dyamnan songs during the excursion, accompanied by Dorjay Stakmo, enriching the hands-on experience of the region's rock art heritage.
