Ladakh’s winter sports scene expands with first kids’ snowboarding camp

The Ladakh Snowboarding Association, in collaboration with 4 Ladakh Scouts under Operation Sadbhavana, organised the regions’ first-ever snowboarding camp. The 10-day-long event, held at South Pullu near Khardung La, aimed to introduce young students to snowboarding, develop their skills, and promote winter sports culture in the region.
A total of 50 students participated in the camp, where they received training from experience coaches. The initiative provided a golden opportunity for young sports enthusiasts to learn and practice snowboarding.
The event showcased live music performance by renowned Ladakhi rap artists Padma Ladol, Lil Thun and Buda Gyatso. Their energetic performances kept the spirit of the event high, making it a memorable experience for all attendees.
Speaking about the success of the event, Stanzin Dorjey, Ladakh Snowboarding Association said, “We had this idea three years ago, but it wasn’t successful at that time. Now, with everyone’s support, we have made it happen. However, we faced challenges this year due to the weather and less snowfall. Our goal is to take Ladakh forward in this sport, and we are excited to conduct another batch once this one ends.”
The students who attended the camp also expressed their excitement and gratitude. One of the participants said, “The coach was very friendly while teaching us. They arranged everything for us, and I will definitely come again next time.” Another student shared, “It’s been nine days, and it has been such an exciting experience. Now, I can snowboard! I will surely come again next year.”
The snowboarding camp marks an important step toward making Ladakh a hub for winter sports. With continuous support and enthusiasm from the local community and authorities, initiatives like these can help shape a bright future for young athletes in the region.
