Tobacco-free youth campaign 2.0 launched in Kargil to combat addiction among youth

Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, attended the launch of the Tobacco-Free Youth Campaign 2.0 at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Baroo, on September 24.

The event aimed to promote a tobacco-free lifestyle among the youth of Kargil. Present at the event were Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Er. Punchok Tashi; Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Suhail Ahmad; Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Fatima Banoo; Block Medical Officer, Dr. Abdul Jaleel; the Principal of Boys Higher Secondary School, medical staff, school staff, and students.

Dr. Akhoon emphasized the importance of the campaign in addressing various forms of addiction, particularly tobacco use. He highlighted the role of willpower in overcoming addiction and encouraged students to avoid harmful habits like smoking.

He also spoke about the improved facilities in government schools and hospitals in Kargil, noting that they compare favorably to those in other states. He mentioned the Boys and Girls Hostels in Jammu and Srinagar, which provide support to students from Kargil.

Dr. Akhoon informed the audience that the Council has requested the Government of India and CBSE to hold exams in November-December, considering the region’s harsh winters. He expressed hope that this proposal would be approved this year or next. Additionally, he praised the ongoing remedial classes, assuring that the Council and UT Administration are working to further enhance them. Dr. Akhoon also commended the Health Department for organizing the event.

Executive Councillor Punchok Tashi expressed his pleasure in being part of the program. He urged everyone to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco and commended teachers for their vital role in shaping the future of students. He also applauded the Health Department for their initiative in organizing the campaign.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Suhail Ahmad addressed the gathering, stressing the need for collective efforts to make Kargil tobacco-free.

Dr. Abdul Jaleel provided insights into the campaign, which seeks to eliminate tobacco and smoking addiction. He called on the public and stakeholders to actively promote the campaign's objectives.

Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Murtaza Ali, delivered a detailed speech on the health risks associated with tobacco use, urging the youth to prioritize their health and well-being.
Students from Boys Higher Secondary School participated by delivering speeches on various health and addiction-related topics, and certificates were awarded to them.
