KARGIL :
Demanding separate Central University for Ladakh region in Kargil, around 500 students joined ‘Run for Ladakh University’ walkathon organised by Students Educational Movement of Kargil (SEMOK) on December 10.
The walkathon was flagged off by Ghulam Mehdi Sheikh, Councillor Baroo Constituency of LAHDC from Tourist Facilitation Center Kargil. The rally after passing through the main road from Baroo and Main market culminated at Lal Chowk, Kargil.
Councillors of LAHDC Kargil from different constituencies, members of SEMOK and other speakers highlighted the establishment of a separate full-fledged university for Ladakh.
The speakers pointed out that setting up of a separate and full-fledged University in Ladakh region is of utmost importance as there is no single university in the region as of now while as there are 6 universities in Jammu region and 5 in Kashmir region.
They stressed the need to give preference for the setting up of the University for Ladakh in Kargil keeping into consideration its central location and equidistant position from Srinagar, Leh and Zanskar.
As a second option, they said that the University campuses already established in the twin districts should be upgraded to the status of full-fledged universities keeping in view the sentiments of the people in both districts.
