Skarma Tsering, the renowned sculptor and state awardee, passed away at the age of 92. His last rites were performed on November 10 at Hemishukpachan. Tsering was a treasured son of Ladakh, and his contributions to the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage will forever be cherished.

Tsering's remarkable craftsmanship can be seen in some of Ladakh's most iconic statues, including the 110-foot Maitreya Buddha in Disket, Nubra; the 80-foot Buddha in Ney; the 72-foot Buddha in Liker; the 90-foot Manjushri in Tia; the 30-foot Shakyamuni Buddha in Hemisshukpachan; and the 25-foot Maitreya Buddha in Lingshed, among many others.

Beyond his exceptional artistry, Tsering inspired countless young minds to preserve and promote this ancient tradition, nurturing a community of young artists who carry his legacy forward.

The Goba of Hemisshukpachan expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Tsering family and highlighted his notable works throughout his lifetime. He shared that while they had hoped for Tsering to receive the Padma Shri award, he was instead honored with a state award. The Goba called on the UT government to posthumously bestow the Padma Shri upon Tsering in recognition of his lifetime of contributions.

Students of Skarma Tsering also paid tribute to their mentor during his last rites, expressing profound sorrow at his passing. They recalled how Tsering had shaped them into skilled artists, teaching them the importance of accuracy, perfection, kindness, and compassion. “He was like a father to us,” they said, regretting that he had not been awarded the Padma Shri while alive, a recognition they believed he truly deserved for his extraordinary craftsmanship.

His legacy will continue to inspire generations, and his sculptures will remain enduring treasures of Ladakh’s cultural heritage.
