Scientific yak rearing highlighted at awareness program in Nubra

A one-day awareness program on the scientific management of yaks was successfully organized on May 26 at the Yak Breeding Farm in Diskit, Nubra. The event was jointly conducted by the ICAR–National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY), Arunachal Pradesh, and the Department of Animal Husbandry, Leh.
Around 125 yak breeders from the region participated in the program. Dr. Motup Angmo, Block Veterinary Officer Nubra, opened the session with a brief overview of its objectives. Dr. Stanzin Rabgais, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Leh, spoke about the importance of yak rearing and various government initiatives aimed at supporting and improving livestock development.
Dr. Mokhtar Hussain, Senior Scientist at ICAR-NRCY, provided insights into modern technologies for yak management, including scientific feeding practices and healthcare. Dr. Vijay Paul, Principal Scientist at ICAR-NRCY, encouraged breeders to explore value addition, product processing, and integrating yak-based livelihoods with eco-tourism opportunities.
The program concluded with the distribution of logistical support to the participating breeders. Items distributed included concentrated feed, gumboots, solar lights, tarpaulins, mineral mixtures, and basic veterinary medicines.
